The occurrence of abuse and neglect of children in care institutions in Eastern and Southeastern Europe and the Caucasus has been known to governments for decades, yet few survivors ever secure redress. The institutional abuse of children takes many forms, including sexual abuse of children in residential care and community-based settings, physical or emotional abuse, and harms suffered from living in the ‘dehumanising institutional environment’ of residential care.
Achievements of INGO “Ponimanie” in realization of National Plan to improve childcare and the protection of children’s rights
In 2010 INGO “Ponimanie” suggested to include articles 55, 56 and 67 into the National Plan to improve childcare and the protection of children’s rights for 2012-2016.
After 5 years of hard work INGO “Ponimanie” is glad to present the achievements and results of our work as well as the difficulties we have faced, carrying out the National Plan.
Children involved in court proceedings often feel scared, ignored, and ill-informed, as a new report from the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) shows. By asking children across different EU Member States about their experiences and views, this ground-breaking report shows how far we still have to go to make our justice systems child-friendly.
In 2015, 524 children in Belarus were reported to have experienced sexual abuse. The expense to Belarus for not preventing that abuse will cost $50,276 per child over his or her lifetime. That adds up to $26.3 million for just that one year.
This was the main conclusion of the 2006 UN Global study on violence against children. In 2015, the UN Special Representative on Violence against Children published the results of a worldwide consultation of children, which highlighted that protection from violence was their second highest priority, right after education.
The training course for initiative groups who are willing to build child-friendly environment in different regions of Belarus took place in Mogilev on November 26-27.
